Rig Academy

Matt Crowes shares one of his winning ‘tweaks’ to an established rig.

HISTORY

The wishbone rig has a long history and it is still favoured by a lot of shore anglers.

Its big advantage is that it presents two baits in fairly close proximity, producing a bigger, more attractive scent trail. Double shots are always possible but you do sometimes get one fish taking both baits too!

The disadvantage is that in its simplest form the rig doesn’t cast brilliantly because it’s not really aerodynamic. There can also be worries in respect of tangling, especially in slacker tidal flows.

I’ve tried to address these problems with a couple of tweaks to the standard rig.

First, I’ve tied the rig up-and-over style with a cascade swivel at the top, which allows a decent length rig body to be kept neat and tidy by looping it up, then back down to the Gemini Splash Down clip.

To try and reduce tangles I keep the hook snoods short and I also use attractors, which add a bit of ballast to stop them being washed about too much. Included are the BoneBass Glow Stick mini lumi attractors, which I have found work very well indeed for all sorts of fish.

Components

70lb Varivas rig body line

20lb Varivas snood line

10 coloured beads

Two clear beads

Two crimps

Two size 1 rolling swivels

A 6/0 Cascade swivel

Two sequins

Two BoneBass Glow Stick mini lumi attractors

Two Size 2 Kamasan B940M hooks

A Gemini Splash Down clip

#3 - Crimp the beads and swivel in place at the centre of the rig body.

#4 - At the free end of the rig body tie on the Gemini Splash Down clip.

#5 - Take four feet of Varivas 20lb snood line and tie to the crimped swivel, then tie a size 1 rolling swivel to the free end.

#6 - Take 10 inches of Varivas 20lb snood line and tie on a Kamasan B940M hook, then slide on a BoneBass Glow Stick mini lumi, five beads and a sequin.

#7 - Put the free end of the snood line through the free size 1 swivel, slide on a sequin, five beads and a BoneBass Glow Stick mini lumi, then tie on another Kamasan B940M hook.
