There are dozens of excellent lure rods on the market and Roger Mortimore thinks the performance of Tenryu’s Super Mix models puts them right near the top!
The Super Mix range is a totally new concept for lure fishing. These ‘all-round’ lure rods have been specially designed for working soft plastics and plugs.
There are three different lengths in the range. The 2.1m model casts 5g to 50g while the 2.4m and 2.7m versions are both rated for 10g to 60g. The rods were designed by top bass anglers in France and Jersey, built in Japan from boron/carbon and fitted with the best Fuji components and guides. The blank is two unequal sections – the tip is longer than the butt – with the spigot joint further down the blank, creating a medium-fast action.
This action is perfect for working a mix of surface poppers, diving lures and soft plastics, which is how the range got its name. When twitching and bouncing soft plastics from the shore, or vertically from a boat, the ‘feel’ through the rod allows you to keep in full contact with the lure.
Having seen and handled most of the Tenryu range, I’ve found that they’re superb rods that cover most aspects of lure fishing and jigging. However, the price of this top-quality kit is daunting and I resisted joining the ‘Red Rod’ cult for months. But resistance was futile after seeing the 2.4m rod cast a Patchinko surface plug over 75 metres at the CLA Game Fair and hearing of striped bass of more than 20lb over in the United States and a 20lb starry smoothhound, both boat caught. Then I watched in awe during a fishing trip to Norway as the same model beat a 20lb halibut from the shore, several huge cod to 27lb and dozens of coalfish to 33lb offshore. The day after we got home from Norway I ordered the 2.4m model and, after six months of hard use, I haven’t regretted it – the action for casting lures and playing fish is simply superb!
I’ve used it successfully for fishing with soft plastics like Xlayers and Sidewinders, hard swimming plugs like the Feed Shallow and Tide Minnow Surf and my favourite top-water plug, the Xorus Patchinko. It has since bagged several fine bass and pike into double figures, so it really is an all-round super rod.
I chose the 2.4m over the 2.1m or 2.7m as I felt this length would give me all the casting distance I’d need and control over a hooked fish – but that’s only my personal preference.
Like most products, you get what you pay for and top-quality products perform better and last longer. In my view, it’s been worth every penny.
