Total Sea Fishing Deputy Editor Roger Mortimore’s recent trip to El Salvador in pursuit of hard-fighting rooster fish has got under his skin.
He’s already gone back, this time taking two TSF readers with him and is sending back daily reports of the action – which has already kicked off with lure-caught fish of over 40lb!
Here Roger delivers his second report on the awesome sportfishing the country has to offer.
Tough day today, fresh winds put up a huge swell that kept us well inside the river so we were unable to fish the 'point', a spot where the currents meet and a hotspot for roosters and jacks.
The heat was also tough with temperatures hitting 38 degrees C, tomorrow's forecast is better with just 35 degrees C and light winds so the plan is to go offshore to a wreck where we had the roosters and snapper on the first day. Once we've got the roosters we'll look for a shrimp boat, apparently these boats are followed by huge schools of jacks and you can get a fish-a-chuck - bring it on!
The images are of Andy Garnham with his sierra, it hit a topwater lure and jumped several times before he could get it ashore. All the fish here seem to have huge mouths and go for lures worked very fast, I guess it's the warm water making the fish more active. Basically, if you don't swim fast - you get eaten! Just after Andy landed his fish we had a shout from Rufi on the boat, he'd hooked into a lively sierra as well, both fish were returned.
We have the use of Chia's 24ft catamaran, powered by two 115HP Yamaha outboards for the week and the services of local boatman Jose 'Rufi' Rufino, his knowledge is invaluable to us for finding fish and where and when to be there.
It's all big mouths and teeth in El Salvador
Keep checking back for more action.
