For lure angler’s one of the most exciting launches at this year’s Tackle & Guns Show had to be from Savage Gear.
Already well established in the UK freshwater lure market, the company is now offering a new range of gear for UK saltwater lure anglers, including rods, lures, luggage and accessories.
Total Sea Fishing got the full run down from Savage Gear’s gear guru Mads Grosell – and we were very impressed.
Salt Lure Rods
Flown in for the second day of the show and never seen anywhere else in the world, the brand new range of salt lure rods consists of five models:
7foot 8-30g rod with a vertical rating of 45g
7foot 4inch 10-45g with a vertical rating of 75g
7foot 4inch 15-68g with a vertical rating of 150g
8foot 6inch 25-80g boat rod
9foot 2inch 15-42g boat rod
Designed to cover the whole gambit of salt water lure fishing in the UK, from ultra-light to boat rods with a bit more back bone, the range’s shore rods also carry vertical ratings for jigging off harbour walls and rocks etc.
“We looked at the styles of fishing and the type of lures used in the UK and boiled the range down to just the five rods that will cover everything,” Mads told TSF. “We wanted high quality rods specifically for saltwater use, so they are extremely light and strong and with details such as the ALPS reel seats and guides which have been specifically customised for this range and offer excellent saltwater durability. ”
Great looking with a white finish along with Savage Gear’s trademark black and orange further down the rod, while also being super tough – Mads has landed a 37kg Norwegian halibut on the lightest rod of the range during testing-, another impressive aspect of the new saltwater lure rod range is the price. Due for release this December they will retail for between £69.99 and £99.99.
Lures
For the company’s launch into the UK saltwater market, as you’d expect Savage Gear has produced a new range of lures as well – all based on Mads’ decades of lure fishing knowledge.
Side Down
The new Side Down lure is designed to mimic a fish that has been picked up and dropped by a gull, delivering a top water lure with a big action and lots of noise thanks to a unique metal mesh sound chamber.
“When I tested this lure over I the UK, the first two casts produced bass of 11lb and 9lb from the rocks,” revealed Mads. “It builds up a lot of kinetic energy making the movement amazing, a perfect lure for dusk fishing when the fish want a big target to hit.”
Saltwater Prey
Minnow shaped hard lures, the prey series comes in five lengths and six colours, and features a wide barrel-role action. Long casting, thanks to free-moving tungsten balls in the casing, the lure also features a phosphorescent treatment on the underside which, thanks to a clear top to the lure self charges in the sun to add extra attraction.
Top Prey
A top water minnow designed to target bass, the Top Prey features both tungsten and glass balls in its casing, giving long casting ability with huge amounts of noise.
LB Sandeel Slug
Featuring air chambers in the rear of its body, the Sandeel Slug delivers a lifelike sit up posture in the in the water. The rear also collapses when a fish strikes, giving better hook up rates.
New Luggage
Also impressive from SG is its new luggage range. Especially impressive are the new Roadrunner Gear bag and the Lure and Gear belt.
Designed for lure anglers looking to carry minimal tackle, the systems put everything you need in easy reach, with a very clever rod holding system that makes changing lure and landing fish very easy.
New Tools and accessories
Savage Gear’s new range of tools, including – wire cutters, diamond hook sharpener and scissors – looks very high-quality, while the addition of an unhooking mat complete with measuring gauge could be a handy touch for anglers.
All of the new lures and accessories will be available in the UK this December.
