TESTING TIMES: Shimano Force Master AX 270MH Spinning Rod - 08/07/2010
Roger Mortimore sneaks out for an early morning plugging session with Shimano’s Force Master AX.
The Force Master spinning rod range comprises 20 models – from the ultra-light 1g to11g rod at 1.65 metres to the extra-heavy 50g to 100g models at 2.4, 2.7 and 3 metres. They’re built on XT40 and GeoFibre blanks fitted with Vibra Spot reel seats for superb sensitivity when working lures or feeling for a bite. The cork foregrip is comfortable and warm to hold, which will be a bonus on chilly early morning sessions. The blank has a fast action with a fairly firm tip, ideal for both casting lures and when feeling for shy fish taking tentative plucks on the retrieve.
The AX270M model that I tested has a casting rating of 14g to 40g, which is spot-on for the majority of plugs we use, from tiny versions in calm, clear conditions to the heavy lures needed on windy days. For the live test I paired the rod with a Stradic 3000 reel loaded with 20lb braid, topped with a short 15lb fluorocarbon leader. I ventured out just after first light to catch the last of the ebb on a particular mark. On the end was a 15g Rapala Maxrap plug that was flicked from 20 to 30 yards around submerged rocks that may hold bass. The crisp action is ideal for accurate casting, which is vital when you need to work the lure in a tight spot or down a narrow gulley.
With braid on the reel and the Vibra Spot reel seat you can actually feel the wobbling action of the plug. This gives a very good idea of what’s going on underwater, although when the plug hits a rock it feels just like a bass grabbing it and your heart races in anticipation. Weighing just 224g, it is very light and even with the reel on weighs only around 500g – about 1lb in old money! This is perfect if you like to roam the shoreline and cover a lot of ground.
To sum up, I enjoyed the session and I liked the rod – it’s light and well balanced with a sensitive but crisp action for chucking lures, and at just £62 you can’t go wrong.
