One Last Cast!
Barney Wright goes to Hopton on Sea, in Norfolk, and discovers why sticking it out can pay dividends.
This season the cod fishing has been exceptional on the East Anglian coast, and local anglers have been making the most of the bounty by getting out there at least twice a week. On one Thursday I heard reports of double-figure fish being caught every day at Hopton on Sea… this was definitely the cue for me to book a trip as soon as possible. I knew that the fish could disappear as quickly as they appeared, so I arranged a trip for the following Tuesday – the soonest I could get there. Over the weekend, a contact of mine said that the fishing was just beginning to drop off; there were still plenty of fish but they were just harder to catch. “Typical!” I thought. It was as though the fish knew I’d booked a trip. I really should have just gone on the spur of the moment
