Former World Champion match angler Steve Allmark makes a comeback after a break to fish in the Kent Classic on the Isle Of Sheppey. Barney Wright takes up the story...

Incredibly, it's been virtually three years since Steve fished a match, which does seem a bit strange seeing as he was once the best match angler in the world, but maybe that's it - where do you go from there? Despite his absence, though, Steve has managed to keep his hand in by regularly pleasure fishing - after all, he does own and run a tackle shop in Deal!

Teaming Up
I knew that it would take a little persuasion to encourage Steve to have another crack at a match, but the Kent Classic is a great leverage point for me ­- he won't have far to travel and there are also plenty of prizes for grabs. The Kent Classic is an annual event, and anglers travel the length of the country to fish in it. The good news is that, this year, after several chats, I finally convince Steve that he should have a go at it. He is to team up in the pairs competition with TSF deputy editor Roger Mortimore. Roger, a top angler himself, also hasn't fished competitively for more than two years - so will this be a case of the blind leading the blind? There's only one way to find out, and that is to get stuck in.
