Colin Penny has made a name for himself as the charter skipper who helps customers land boatloads of free tackle. Roger Mortimore joined Colin aboard his boat ‘Flamer III’ to see if he could join his list of ‘prize guys’

Thanks to Colin’s fish-finding skills, hundreds of anglers have won prize rods and reels for topping big-fish competitions in magazines and newspapers. Colin, who operates his ‘Flamer III’ vessel out of Weymouth, Dorset, revealed: “Most people who land a good fish never think about putting it forward as a prize winner. They always assume that it has to be a record breaker to stand a chance of success. “This is an area that I decided to be very proactive in many years ago and I always make sure that anyone who catches a decent fish from my boat has a good-quality picture and the relevant address or entry forms to send off their catches. The number of customers who have picked up tackle in big-fish contests runs into the hundreds.”

With Colin’s track record I had high hopes of becoming a ‘prize guy’ myself. As I approached the harbour it was minus 4ºC but Colin had promised some hot action while fishing over a secret English Channel wreck. The hope that I set out with was turned into glory by the end of the trip when an 18lb 8oz pollack grabbed my fire-tail jellyworm to beat my previous best by a mighty 2lb.
