Beating The Weather

Barney Wright joins former World Boat Angling Champion Glen Milligan to target Solent cod aboard his charter boat ‘Wight Huntress’ out of Portsmouth.

Every charter-boat skipper has particular methods and favourite marks. However, when the weather is against them skippers must think on their feet and try, as much as possible, to have a back-up plan. Since Glen Milligan is based by the Solent, a stretch of water between the Isle of Wight and the English mainland, he is in a position where he can sometimes avoid harsh weather and still get afloat. TSF joined him recently for a codding session and was surprised at how productive the area can be. Glen takes up the story…

WEATHER
This season’s cod fishing has so far been pretty reliable, with a steady stream of double-figure fish being caught on most marks in the Solent and around the Isle of Wight. But as often happens with boat fishing around our coastline, the weather has been bad, preventing us from accessing those big cod far out in the English Channel. Nevertheless, we are fortunate in our location of Portsmouth because the Isle of Wight provides protection from southerly winds, allowing us to fish marks in and around the Solent when the weather is harsh.
