Roger Mortimore experienced some spectacular bass action deep in the West Country recently with the Bass Masters guide service

I can’t think of a more exciting way of fishing for bass than when using lures. You cast along a gulley and slowly retrieve, then… bang! Something hits the lure, the rod bends, your heart beats faster and your hands and legs tremble as line is ripped from the reel. You play the fish carefully until it tires, then you lift several pounds of silver bass from the sea.

Lure fishing is – without doubt – the fastest-growing method of sea fishing in the UK. All you need is a rod, reel and a bag of lures. There’s no need for smelly baits or livebaits that need constant attention to keep them in good condition. Just pick up your rod, clip on a lure and cast. It’s good exercise, too, as I found out on a recent trip to Cornwall to fish with Bass Masters’ guide service.

The guides are Nathan Taylor and Iain Venn, assisted by Nathan’s father, Rob. Bass Masters comes under the umbrella of France-based Ultimate Fishing and Nathan is its first accredited and sponsored guide to be signed up in England.
